Terms
- Pure sequence
- At least three consecutive cards of one suit, with no joker filling a gap. Many players call the mandatory pure sequence a life. See the pure sequence guide.
- Impure sequence
- A run that uses a joker to stand in for a missing card. It can support a hand, but it does not satisfy the pure-sequence requirement.
- Set
- Three or four cards of the same rank in different suits, such as 8♠ 8♥ 8♦. A set is not a sequence.
- Printed joker
- The joker card in a standard deck. Used as a substitute, it usually scores zero.
- Wild joker
- A rank chosen for that deal. Every card of that rank can act as a joker, subject to the table’s rule for using one in its natural suit.
- Closed deck
- The face-down pile you draw from.
- Open deck
- The face-up discard pile. The top card is available when the table allows a draw from it.
- Discard
- The card you place on the open deck to end a turn and return to the required hand size.
- Declaration
- The claim that your 13 cards are fully grouped. A valid declaration scores zero in the common formats. A wrong one is penalised by the table.
- Drop
- Leaving a deal before declaring. Points tables often charge less for an early drop than for a full unmatched hand. The numbers are a table rule.
- Points rummy
- A format that scores each deal on its own. Read the format.
- Pool rummy
- A running total, commonly to 101 or 201, that eliminates a player who reaches the line. Read the format.
- Deals rummy
- A fixed number of deals, commonly two or three, compared at the end. Read the format.
- Full count
- The maximum penalty a table assigns, often after a wrong declaration. A common cap is 80 points, but only when that table says so.
